Posted on Mon, 11 Aug 2014
Question: Hello Doctor,
In the 4th month, 1st week of pregnancy my wife had undergone Thyroid test and found increase thyroid level of 8.17 but due to negligence of the hospital management we came to know it now in her 7th month 3weeks. She has started taking Thyroid 50mcg tablet. We observe good and active movements of the baby but we are extremely worried about fetes development during this 3months. Please suggest and advice as i heard that it would cause problems in brain development of baby.

Please let us know what precaution do we need to take.

Brief Answer:
Continue thyroid 50

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
You are correct about the effect of thyroid levels on the fetal development. The main need of the thyroid medicine is in the first trimester. During the fetal development. In your case, the level is slightly higher than normal. There is basically nothing to be done now. Continue the thyroid medicine and dont stop till the delivery. After that, check thyroid levels again. Hope you have done a congenital anomaly scan in the 5th month.
Right now, just continue medicines, and dont eat cabbage(sometimes known to increase thyroid levels).

I have uploaded ultrasound report which was performed yesterday. Also, we are waiting for your response on yesterday's followup question. kindly please answer.
Congenital anomaly scan was done in 5th month and at that time doctor said everything is good and normal. But now we are worried does our baby would have any problems after delivery or would there be any problem in brain development? We would like to know what could be the difficulties baby would face? Or the baby development would be back to normal till the due date.. Kindly suggest, also i have uploaded the ultrasound report kindly please review it and give your feedback on it.

Thanks!

Brief Answer:
report is ok

Detailed Answer:
The ultrasound appears to normal . But any brain developmental anomalies cannot be ascertained until the baby is delivered . Since the thyroid level showed a slight increase in the previous report one can hope that won't cause any brain developmental anomalies . Right now , don't think negative . All reports show normal results . Continue the advised medicine . Your use report is ok . Age and weight of the baby seem to be normal . No gross anomalies are seen .
