What Are The Chances Of Infection Recurrence When On Treatment For Gonnorhea And Clamydia?

Posted on Wed, 22 Apr 2015
Question: My boy friend and I have tested positive for Gonnorhea and Clamydia. Before getting our results my boyfriend was put on Augmentin 875mg twice a day for Urethritis while waiting on results, his symptoms went away after two days. Monday he was given Zithromax 1g , Cipro 500mg twice a day for three days, and Suprax one dose. I was treated yesterday with an injection and Zithromax 1g. My question is what is the percent of reinfection if we have intetcourse over the weekend, my doctor said Gonnorhea is non infectious after 24hrs and Clamydia 1 day, and 7 days abstinence is just protocol. Since he was on meds before the results and we both have no symptoms??

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query.

It is possible that Gonorrhea is rendered non-infectious 24 h after you start the antibiotic and Chlamydia may take 1-2 days to become non-infectious.
The problem is that you can't know if for sure and for this reason is established a secure period of time of 7 days. This period of time is necessary to be completely sure that the infection is treated and there is no risk of reinfection.
You should not have oral, anal or vaginal sex for seven days after the treatment .

I would suggest not to take the risk because prevention is better that risking an reinfection that would require further treatment .
The choice is up to you.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any other question or need further help.

I read this on meta-help so it confused me a little bit that's why I asked the question.

Since you both were properly treated against both gonorrhea and chlamydia, you can be 100% confident neither of you could have reinfected the other. Even if the infection were still persisting in one of you 4 days after treatment, the other person still had plenty of antibiotic in his/her system to prevent reinfection.

The standard advice by STD experts is to avoid sex for a week after treatment for gonorrhea. But this really is most important with respect to other partners; for two people who both were infected, and with no new partners, it really isn't a big deal. You don't need retesting.

Hello again.

I read carefully the answer of the doctor and the explanation makes sense but in practice is not always true.
Reinfection can happen even if both partners are being treated for the infection. The recommendation to avoid sexual intercourse at least 1 week after the treatment is completed has originated from the observation of a large number of patients and studies that have confirmed the fact that reinfection can occur if the partners engage in sexual intercourse during the treatment of short after the treatment.

It takes up to 5-6 days for the infection to clear up.
If you really want to have sexual intercourse It would be good to use a condom to minimize the risk of reinfection.

Kind regards,
Dr.Rovena
