Question: Had some blood work done through my PCP. Had an elevated protein mspike of 0.6. Referral to hematologist. Is that a pretty low mspike? Do I need to be worried? Is it definitely MGUS or could it be nothing?Could it be myeloma at this point?

Brief Answer:
No it is not myeloma.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.

In myeloma M spike level is very high. It is more then 3 in myeloma. Your level is only 0.6 so don't worry at all about myeloma at this point.

However t may be MGUS. MGUS is not a cause of big worry. Many normal persons may have MGUS. It suggest you have higher then normal protein. But it is premalignant condition and it can turn in to myeloma in few cases.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer.

Is it 1% each year that it might turn into myleoma? So after 20 years, 20%? Does catching myeloma earlier make treatment any better? I know you can't make myeloma go away. What will my hematologist consist of? Is there a chance it might not be MGUS either? thanks for your response.

Brief Answer:
Its not myeloma after 20 years.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.

We can not calculate like 1% each year and like that.

Catching myeloma earlier help in better treatment and avoid complications.
So MGUS patients need life long follow up.

But very few people develop myeloma. So it is not necessary that MGUS will turn in to myeloma. Chances of not getting myeloma is higher.

In MGUS no treatment is required.
Just go for follow up with protein electrophoresis, CBC, Calcium and creatinine level.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer.
