Posted on Fri, 22 Jan 2016
Question: I had some postmenopausal bleeding and am a Kaiser patient, a midwife and gynocolo gist were unable to do an endometrial biopsy due to my cervix being closed. An us showed some thickening of the uterine lining and they now want to do a surgical procedure to explore my uterus without removing it.I wonder if there is another way to dilate my cervix perhaps and avoid surgery? Is this common and how soon do I need to be treated?I want to avoid surgery as much as possible, my pap test was normal, hope you can help, thank you,
Ilona

Brief Answer:
Likely hysteroscopy

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Cervical opening can be dilated by metal dilators, or by misoprostol tablets insertion prior to the procedure.
Dilatation of cervix is more easy and painless if done under anaesthesia.Your doctor might have decided to do hysteroscopy, which is internal examination of the uterus by a thin instrument. It isnot a major surgery, so do not take stress.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.
