Brief Answer:
prophylaxis by medicines is the best option

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Bipolar depression is different from simple unipolar depression. It does not respond to simple antidepressant treatment.
Lithium or lamotrigine is the choice of medicine for treatment for biplor depression. Even after complete remission either of the same should be continued in minimum possible dose to prevent relapse.Other options are aripirazole, quetiapine ,combination of olanzapine+fluoxetine and electro convulsive therapy(ECT).

With drug therapy psychotherapy specially CBT(Cognitive Behavior therapy) should be done. It helps to stabilize in more positive way and to prevent relapse.

Apart form these approaches regular healthy diet, adequate timely sleep, daily exercise, awareness about bipolar symptoms, regular consultation with doctor and observation by family members are important aspects to cope with bipolar depression.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
