Posted on Mon, 14 Nov 2016
Question: Hi Dr. XXXXXXX Greetings to you.

My daughter is 38 days old and is suffering from Viral fever (reading: 100.3 F). Our Peadiatric advised to administer ADVENT Drops for 3 times a day with 0.5 ML. Can you let me know if the medicine starts working immediately or will have effect after a day or 2?? Please confirm as this info will help manager her health better. Our Paed has asked to wait until morning for the same. Cant hold my curiosity in view of my daughters current plight. Please answer. Thanking you in anticipation.

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic. Your query has been posted on a common platform where Dr. XXXXXXX might not be available to answer it. In order to avoid unnecessary delay I have taken up your question since I feel that I can answer it properly.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Children often suffer from viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Antibiotics would not help and irrespective of treatment it usually spontaneously resolves in 5-7 days. Advent is an antibiotic and would not help (antibiotics are for bacterial infections, they are not effective against viruses). Hence it will not act at all (Day 2, Day 5 or Day x).

Please be patient. The fever may take a few days for recovery. You need to monitor the child for lethargy and poor urinary output. Unless that is the case, you need not worry.

Feel free to write back in case of further queries.

Regards

Hi Doctor. Thanks for your response. We had a follow up temp check now. It's 100.9 F. Is this common?? Her urine output is normal and good. However due to fever she's tired and lethargic. Is thr any guidance u can give to reduce the temp as it seems to be increasing by the hour.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Yes, such temperatures are common. During the high temperature activity is likely to be down. It is acceptable. But when the child is afebrile the child should be active and fine. If not, you would need to get the blood tested for blood counts and C-Reactive Protein.

Feel free to write back.
