Suggest Treatment For Uterine Fibroids

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Apr 2015
Question: I had multiple Laproscopic myomectomies, removing 4 fibroids (intramural) from my uterus on 23 XXXXXXX 2014. I never had any symptoms of the fibroids, like heavy bleeding or anything prior to my laproscopic myomectomies. The fibroid was detected during general examination by my Dr., as a hard mass in the abdomin. I got ultra sound done thereafter and found I was having fibroids in uterus.
The largest was of the size of 11cm (at the fundus).

During Laproscopic myomectomy an incision was given at the bottom to take out pieces of fibroids.

Thereafter, I conceived my first baby in May'15 (LMP - 15 April 2014). I had elective C section delivery on 24 Dec'14 at 36 weeks. No problem during pregnancy.
Now after delivery my Dr is recommending me to get Mirena implanted in my uterus for contraception. She says it will keep fibroids in check. It lasts for 5-7 years and gives good protection. Please advise is Mirena Safe to use in my case. Also whats the general view about safety in usage for Mirena, is it considered safe.
I never had heavy bleeding prior to laproscopic myomectomy (23 jan'14). My firboids had never shown any symptoms
Apart from Mirena what all contraception options I have keeping in mind my fibroids.

Brief Answer:
copper T or oral pills

Detailed Answer:
Hello mam, thanks for trusting health care magic.
Mirena is a good contraception method and also relieves menstrual problems.
But as you said you have never had any menstrual disturbance, there is no extra benefit to you apart from contraception.
Mirena has no effect on fibroids so it will not keep a check over fibroid growth in future.
You can opt for simple IUCD (intrauterine contraceptive devices) like copper T instead of mirena.
As Copper T is cheap and has no hormone inside so will not affect menstrual cycle regularity at all whereas Mirena can cause irregular periods in some women.
Or you can opt for oral pills which ate safe and have good contraception benefit but you will need a good compliance and consume the pulls daily at roughly same time.
Discuss all the points with your gynecologist and choose accordingly.
In case you have any questions about it, please feel free to ask.
Regards
Dr Manisha
