Suggest Treatment For Throbbing Pain In Neck

default
Posted on Fri, 20 Mar 2015
Question: Several months ago I had a throbbing pain in my neck near the ceratoid artery. My doctor told me to take advil and said this was a fairly common problem. They did an MRI at the time and the artery was fine. The issue went away and now it is back. I have been in the process of moving and wonder if my lifting boxes contributed to this. I dislike living on Advil and I am not sure if I am even doing the right thing.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to lifting boxes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the neck can be due to lifting of heavy boxes. This can cause a small muscle tear or spasm in the area.
The main treatment of such problem is
1. Use of cervical collar helps in immobilisation and brings relief.
2. Medical drugs like pain killers - acetaminophen/ibuprofen and muscle relaxants might be helpful.
3. Cervical isometric exercises are beneficial to maintain the strength of the neck muscles. Neck and upper back stretching exercises, as well as light aerobic activities, also are recommended under the guidance of a physical therapist.
4. Hot fomentation helps in relieving acute symptoms.
5. You can avoid using a pillow.
As you try these measures, I also encourage you to consult an orthopedician for both evaluation and to avail stronger prescription medications (if over the counter medications are not helpful).
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.
