Question: My two year old daughter woke up from her nap yesterday and was sort of limping. Today she is limping and her knee and leg just above knee is swollen and red and also she is itching it. It doesn't seem to hurt her too much is a real swollen compared to other knee. I have been icing it today. Should this be cause for concern ?

Brief Answer:
Yes, the Knee needs to be examined by an orthopedic doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Yes, a swollen knee should be worked up. If there is associated warmth, redness, restriction of movement, tenderness and swelling on the physical exam then an MRI of the knee should be advised especially if there is suspicion of a twisting knee injury. Aspiration of joint fluid can be done to rule out septic arthritis. Ibuprofen can be given to reduce the pain and swelling along with local ice application. You should get an orthopedic surgeon to have a look at the knee. You may go to an E.R near you to have the knee examined.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
