Question: need information regarding a recent MRI finding that my sister ha had. she has experienced supratentorial hyperintensities. she was adopted as an infant so we have no medical history from her birth parents. is this something we need to be worried about? her symptoms have been a few dizzy spells, in which she has memory lapse immediately prior to and following her episodes. since she does not return to her primary care doctor for another 2 weeks or so, is this a serious matter?

Brief Answer:
Hyperintensities less than five in number are generally non specific.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Findings are not very serious.

T2 weighted or FLAIR hyperintensities less than five in number are generally non specific.
If it is more than five in number then it is the cause of concern and need further follow up.
It may be related to ischemic changes resulting from involvement of small blood vessels. However findings may also be due to demyelination, post traumatic, lyme infection etc.

Ischemic changes resulting from blood vessels changes in diseases like hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia. These factors should be excluded in her case.
It is important to exclude hypertension due to her symptoms like dizziness.

She need investigations like routine haemogram, random blood sugar, liver function test, renal function test, Lipid profile.

Treatment depend upon clinical findings and investigation reports.

She may also need follow up scan to detect progression of lesions.

Get well soon.
Hope I have answered your question.
Further queries are most welcome.
