Suggest Treatment For Stinging Pain In The Thumb

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Jan 2017
Question: I am a 42 year old male – when doing basic household work (nothing violent, no trauma, just holding things normally) I suddenly felt a stinging pain in my thumb. The same thing happened when using a vacuum cleaner a couple of years ago. Pain increases, and then subsides as if a vessel breaks. The thumb then feels sore and swollen, a bit red. And a bruise appears, as from a bleeding under the skin. It is as if having hit the thumb with a hammer. I have googled – the symtoms are similar to Achenbach's syndrome. Should I be worried?

Brief Answer:
worried only if pain is very severe and still persist after 2 days.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have read your query.

You have rightly approached near your diagnosis.

I want to further add that its self-limiting condition of unknown cause.

You should be cautious only if you have in addition, Raynaud's syndrome i.e (Cold fingers or toes,Color changes in your skin in response to cold or stress
Numb, prickly feeling or stinging pain upon warming or stress relief), thyroid abnormalities, allergy, and migraine other wise no need to panic.

However, if you have only pain and bruise then, its self-limiting course of Achenbach's syndrome, and in such cases investigations are seldom required.

Only thing you can do is get xray of hand focusing thumb in AP, Lateral, Oblique view done and send me the report.

If pain increases throughout the day with in 2 days, then visit emergency room, as the doctor doing physical examination may

I hope it helps.

Thanks.
