Suggest Treatment For Sneezing And Fatigue

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Dec 2016
Question: Hey dr,

Recently on Friday night I was exposed to someone with a cold when I gave them a hug and when I was hanging around them. It's now Monday afternoon so it's been almost three days but I have been starting to sneeze up clear mucus as you can see in the attached picture could this be a sign that a cold is starting to come on? I feel a little fatigue and i've been stressed most of today so i'm not sure if that could of been it, is there anything I should do to prevent it or shorten the duration if it is a cold or is it nothing to worry about?

Kind Regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
common cold is the most likely cause

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

taking into account your friend's condition and your current condition, the most likely cause is common cold. Sneezing and having a runny and congested nose is common. Fever is less common but low grade fever may occur in some patients. High fever is not expected though, so if you develop more symptoms than the already described ones, you'd better visit your doctor. Worrisome signs and symptoms include any of the following:
- fever
- pain with deep breaths
- low blood pressure and faintness
- fast heart rate (higher than 100 beats per minute)
- shortness of breath

I can't comment on the fluid because it's not easy to do so by looking at a picture. It seems like clear mucus though, which is consistent with common cold.

Managing the symptoms is the only thing you can do for common cold. The runny nose can be improved with antihistamines. Decongestants will take care of congestion and paracetamol will make malaise less annoying.

I hope it helps!
Kind Regards!
