Suggest Treatment For Slight Thinning Of Bone Density In Hip

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Feb 2015
Question: I recently saw an endo for the first time. She gave me a done density scan and said it was fine except for a slight thinning of my left hip. I long ago was pre-diagonsed with severe anxiety and it has gotten much worse when she told me to take 2,000 IUs of Vitamin D and 12.00 mg of calcium. I need to know if these vitamins are causing my anxiety and sleep disturbances. I started taking both vitamins a week ago and in the past few days my anxiety has gotten really bad.

I meant to say 1,200 mg of calcium

Brief Answer:
Not impossible but unlikely.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic!

Both vitamin D and high blood calcium levels can cause anxiety as a side effect, but these are not common. Moreover, you also would have been likely to have other side effects as well as anxiety.

Vitamin D supplements are actually known to help people with anxiety disorders and depression. In my opinion, a more likely cause of your symptoms is the tapering off of Valium. A worsening of anxiety is a very common withdrawal symptom for all benzodiazepines like Valium. So, if the present worsening coincides with a change in dosage of Valium, then that is the culprit. You can be doubly sure by withholding the vitamin D and calcium supplements for a few days and seeing if that helps reduce the anxiety or not. Since there were no major abnormalities in your bone density scan, withholding the supplements for a few days will not be detrimental to your health.

I hope this helps you. Please feel free to ask in case you need any clarifications.

Best wishes.
