Suggest Treatment For Side Effects Of Neurontin 800

Question: I am on neurotin 800 mg tid for neuropathy in my feet and it has been very helpful but it has caused an increase in any bleeding. If I XXXXXXX my leg while shaving I have to apply a pressure dressing and wrap and elevate my leg for an hour or more or blood just pours out freely. It does not appear thin, it just flows more freely and I thought this was just part of the action of the medication. My regular doctor is on vacation and I wanted to know if this dose is unusually high and if the bleeding is a sign of a more serious problem.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Regarding whether the dosage is high, I am not sure whether you mean 3 times 800mg (2400 mg a day total), or 800 mg divided in 3 doses. Dosage of Neurontin can vary, generally the highest dose is 2400 mg, maximum dosages up to 3600 mg a day have been used but for short periods of time. So if you are taking 3 times 800 mg it is a pretty high dose, I very rarely have gone that high in my patients. If 800 mg a day, then it's an average dose.

Regarding increased bleeding it is not a commonly reported side effect, personally it has never been an issue with my patient and effect on blood elements is very rare in literature. However if present must be taken seriously, especially if you have other signs like bruising easily and at least a couple of routine blood tests like complete blood count, INR, coagulation and hemorrhage test would assess whether it is indeed an issue.

I hope to have been of help.

Thank you, I thought about the same thing because I am on the 2400 mg a day total and thought it was extreme. I will request the blood work you have suggested. I was a nurse for many years and I worked with excellent doctors who were good teachers also. I learned a lot just by listening. Thank you for the advice.
