Suggest Treatment For Side Effects Of Cefdinir

Question: My wife was placed on Cefdinir 300 mg Q 12hrs PO after being diagnosed with RML Pneumonia. (She only has about 30% kidney function due to end stage renal failure), is a type II DIABETIC w/multiple arterial stents and marginally controlled hypertension. Her pneumonia is very slow to resolve and she has prolonged coughing episodes now with associated L inguinal pain (likely due to the prolonged coughing spells. She is also experiencing extreme fatigue, vertigo, blurred/double vision and unable to ambulate safely due to weakness. I have scheduled a return visit for her later today but am very concerned about the potential side effects of Cefdinir? Please advise?

I can understand your concern.

Cefdinir is cephalosporin group of antibiotic.
It is very safe in renal, diabetic and cardiac patients.
So no need to worry for cefdinir side effects.
But in my opinion, she needs dual antibiotics for better and wider antimicrobial coverage.
She is having many comorbid conditions like diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, hypertension etc. And all these lead to complex lung infection. So better to start dual antibiotic treatment.
So discuss about this with her treating doctor.
