Question: I have been walking the local the local YMCA for several MONY
THS DUE TO THE HEAT INDEX HERE IN Florida. I usually completer 4-5-
miles each day 4-6 timed a week. I walked the mall last Sunday doing shopping and was in a hurry. By the I returned to my car my knee was keeling tight and started to swell but I was able to continue walking that evening to finish up errands I was trying to get completed. Monday I stayed off of it as much as possible and alternated ice and heat. woke up later in evening in a lot of pain. saw my primary Doctor on Tuesday and she said I need to see an orthopedic and gave a script for strong anti-inflammatory and pain medication. My knee has swollen twice the normal size and have to have help or use crutches to use bathroom, shower or walk. Told to stay off as much as possible by the Doctor and cannot drive because it is my right side. What should I expect at the orthopedic on Monday. Already had an x- ray.

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

I have read your query and understood your problem.

Do you have a hot, red swollen knee ?

Are you Diabetic ?

Are any other joints painful like the shall jobs of your hands, your ankles, elbows, back of the neck, hip.

This is a classical setting if knee arthritis which can come in many forms like bacterial infection toon or septic arthritis. Also possible are Rheumatoid arthritis, Gout.

Since you have sudden large knee swelling, you should avoid bearing weight on that knee. Apply cold soaks around the knee for pain relief. You may need a needle aspiration to give the joint fluid for testing to find out type of arthritis.

If you have fever, there is high chance it is septic. You need to urgently show to your Orthopaedic surgeon, if it is red, hot and swollen as it could be septic arthritis. This requires urgent aspiration, joint lavage and antibiotic therapy.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available for follow up queries.

Thanking you.
