default
Posted on Thu, 8 Dec 2016
Question: 4-5 months ago my husband had a severe allergic reaction unloading hay. Immediately after he had a severe cough, even a slightfever, and soon developed a sore throat..it has become chronic. The cough has improved somewhat but throat is still sore. 2 days ago started noticing pain up into his ear. He had no symptoms whatsoever before the hay incident 4-5 months ago. We are going to ENT but very worried. Are there reactions that can become chronice like this? Very worried about throat cancer.

Brief Answer:
There may be a sinus infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Please don't worry as from your history it looks more likely that your husband is having a sinus issue.

The sinus congestion can be precipitated by an allergic reaction, which may be the case in your husband.

The sinus congestion leads to persistent post nasal drops which can cause sore throat. The congestion can also lead to referred pain to the ears.

In my patients I would normally start a short course of oral steroids along with steroid nasal sprays and ask them to take steam inhalation thrice a day.

I would also like to do an nasal endoscopy on them in order to look for the extent of the problem

Please don't worry, I am sure your husband will be fine

Take care
