Question: my 2 yr old was laughing and splashing in the bath tub last night (24 hours ago) and some water went down the wrong way ... she was scooping/splashing with a cup. She coughed and spluttered then and seemed ok but today, although in good spirits and quite active, she has a runny nose and a cough ... should I go to the doctor to check that there is no water in her lungs?

Brief Answer:
unlikely to escalate

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to health care magic.
Such episodes are very common in kids as they play in splash pool.
But usually airway defence mechanisms will ensure that not much fluid enters the lungs.
Try giving benadryl cough formula for a day or two.
If still she doesn't improve, you need to take her to nearby doctor.

Regards
Dr Arun
