Suggest Treatment For Porokeratosis

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Nov 2016
Question: I was diagnosed with porokeratosis and have had the condition for over 10 years, I was told the spots will increase as time goes by, however, there does not seem to be an effective topical treatment available in North XXXXXXX although there are treatments available in Australia. Support lines do mention using a zinc based cream. What is the recommended topical treatment for the condition.

Brief Answer:
Topical treatment recommended.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

Treatment is not required for most patients with porokeratosis but may be desired by patients with symptomatic or cosmetically distressing lesions.

-- For patients with only a few small lesions who desire rapid treatment for symptomatic or cosmetic purposes and who are willing to accept treatment-related pigment changes or scarring, suggested treatment is with cryotherapy, electrodesiccation and curettage, or surgical excision.

-- For patients with large or multiple lesions or who are concerned about the possibility of scarring with the interventions above, it's suggested as treatment with topical therapy. Creams that are used- Topical 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), imiquimod, or ingenol mebutate may be used for the treatment of localized areas. Topical tretinoin and topical vitamin D analogs are less irritating therapeutic options but may require long courses of therapy.

Treatment with systemic retinoids is usually reserved for severe cases. Relapse is likely after treatment cessation.

Please discuss with your doctor regarding these.

Hope this is helpful.
