Posted on Thu, 24 Sep 2015
Question: I have osteoporosis and take Prilosec. I had a perforated ulcer and my dr wants me to take this drug. I've heard this will prevent calcium absorption. Is this true and if so can I stop taking the Prilosec . I do take a calcium supplement with vitamin D.

Brief Answer:
omeperazole use in osteoporosis

Detailed Answer:
Hi!

Welcome to health care magic!

I am Dr. Saddiq Ul Abidin. I have read your problem in detail and will try to help you in best way possible.

Your concerns are quite right. The drug you asked for, aka omeperazole belongs to proton pump inhibitors and are among first line treatment options for gastric ulcer disease.

Among recognised side effects, the low magnesium levels caused by it, in turn, cause low calcium though a complex pathway.

It has been advised that in such settings taking supplements of Calcium and D3 are helpful to overcome such state, and doesn't have clinical implications in patients on replacement therapy for these micronutrients.

The first priority should be treating the ulcer, as insensual blood loss or other complications through such ulcers can be serious. Osteoporosis is slowly progressing and can be managed alongside by maintaining adequate levels with replacements, of all the causing micronutrients.

Hope this has answered your query, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. kindly rate me generously before closing, and leave your feedback if possible.

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ul abidin.
