Question: For 2 weeks i have had right groin pain when turning my hips (started after golfing) I do not know if it is muscle sprain or a problem in the hip joint. It hurts to stand up and I am slow to start walking, but I can run without pain. Do i need an xray of the hip or MRI as first test?

Thanks, XXXXXXX XXXXX

Brief Answer:
It looks like a muscle strain

Detailed Answer:
I have studied your case and most probably it is a muscle strain. If you able to run then I do not think that you are having any major hip problem. But to better understand your illness, I want to know few questions.
1.Are you able to squat and use stairs?
2. Is this pain increasing since last two weeks or stable?
3. Did you have such pain in the past?
Please send me answers of these questions, I will try my best to help you.
Thanks

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX

Yes I can squat and use stairs. The pain started 3 weeks ago following torsion of hips while playing golf. It is getting slightly better each week. Today a hip xray showed no defects of the boney structures. The ortho MD thinks it is muscle strain and recommended PT and motrin. What is the best Rx for muscle strain assuming you are both right on the Dx? How long will it take to return to normal?

Thanks, XXXXXXX XXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Rest is best treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Best treatment for muscle strain is rest. I would not say that you should do bed rest but avoid sports, running, squatting for 2 weeks.
Also daily sit in hot water tub for ten minutes.
I would also recommend you to take anti-inflammatory like Brufen or diclofenac tablet for a week. This will help in healing.
I hope this answers your query. Let me know if there is any other follow up questions.
Thanks.
