Brief Answer:
Ultrasound and FNAC is a must

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.

Noted the history about your 42 year old son having hard lump on the right side of neck near Adam's apple, it was pea sized for many years and one day it is almost of the size of a golf ball.

Such a thing can happen in the following situations:

Solitary nodule of thyroid can increase in size suddenly due to bleeding inside it and appears hard due to pressure within.

Since you have mentioned this as hard, it may mean malignancy.

Hence irrespective of insurance, I would advice you the following:

High resolution ultrasonography and guided FNAC that is fine needle aspiration cytology will help to get a definitive diagnosis.

Medical field depends upon the fact and earlier is the diagnosis, better will be treatment and prognosis .

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards
