Brief Answer:
Degenerative changes.

Detailed Answer:
welcome to Health care magic.
Iam Dr Ganesh.

1.The most possible cause is joint dislocation / reduced joint space.

2.In your age i would suspect age related degenerative changes.

3. First thing get a simple x-ray both knee AP/LAT it will give a gross idea about degenerative changes and joint space. But MRI is the investigation of the choice in this case ( helps to evaluate the joint space / ligament / meniscus / bursa / tendon condition ).

4.On general examination one will not able to come to conclusion, so please get these done, and you need to visit an ortho specialist for further evaluation.

5. Mean while avoid weight bearing and use support.
Many cases operative procedure is treatment of choice.
How ever its done if the underlying medical conditions support.

Hope it helps you. Wish you a good health.
