Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr Shuba Hariprasad and hope to address your concerns today.

Palpitation is a symptom related to the heart. This is when the heart beat is felt by the individual in certain situations (when heartbeat is too fast like when one is frightened).
It can also be described as heart is pounding.

Do you mean to say that you feel this sensation in your stomach area?

Would you please clarify a few things for me?
- you mentioned you are otherwise healthy. Can I take it to mean that you do not have any other medical issues like hypertension, diabetes, for instance?

-do you take any supplements or medication?

-do you have any other symptoms like chest discomfort, indigestion, altered bowel movements,, unexplained sweating or breathing difficulty?

-do you smoke or consume alcohol?

Please get back to me with the requested clarifications so that I may help you further.

Thank you Dr XXXXXXX so far:

The palpitations are exactly in my stomach (or just possibly intestine in the same location?), right above my groin. I had a full medical recently with a healthy-overall report but I should have mentioned two conditions before (!):

- I have had a right-side hernia for 12 months, which I am schedling to have repaired. Minor discomfort when the 'bulge' protrudes.
- I have had, on and off, stomach aches for 2-3 months. I ascribed these, rightly or wrongly, to stress. 9 out of 10 start when I am rushing home at 7pm after working very intensively. My GP is nevertheless scheduling a procedure to inspect my gastrointestinal tract and stomach.
- I never smoked
- I drink respectable amounts of mostly wine, 2-3 glasses a day, daily
- no other conditions or medications
- generally I work too hard and my hunch this is stress related but it's different! And worrying me!

Kind regards, XXXXXXX XXXX

Brief Answer:
Sorry but need a few more clarification

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for the follow up and clarifications.

-are these sensations (palpitations) felt over or near the site of the hernia?
-is it felt more when you have to use the toilet?
-is it a rhythmic feeling or do you feel it rumbling? (like something is moving inside)
-any difficulties in passing urine?

The area you described is over the urinary bladder, intestines.
The stomach is higher up just below the breast bone (where the ribs meet at the centre).

Sometimes peristaltic movements of the intestine can be felt when it is distended with gas or Fecal matter.
As you have a hernia, inflammation caused by it can make these movements more prominent.

The pains you have been having these past 2-3 months:
-is it over the area I described above as the stomach?
-do you have any burning sensation in the chest?
-does the pain get better after you eat something?
-do you have a high stress job?
-do you go for long hours without meals?

I believe you are right about the stress causing the gastritis. However certain other lifestyle habits can also contribute to it.

I recommend :
-having timely meals. More frequent but smaller meals (every 2-3hrs)
-healthy snacking (fruits, nuts, sprouts, salads)
-avoid caffeine and alcohol on an empty stomach
-avoid spicy, oily, fried and bitter foods.
-avoid refined and processed food. Opt for whole grains (whole wheat, for instance).
-avoid extremes of temperatures while eating or drinking (not too hot, not too cold either)
-drink at least 2.5 liters of water a day.

Please try to note when your symptoms of " palpitations" occur or is more prominent

If you have any abdominal pain, blood in stools, please see your gastroenterologist immediately.

Hope this helps.
Please get back to me with the above clarifications.

Best wishes,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
