Question: My daughter-in-law works for a pool chemical company. She is 13 weeks pregnant and has been having chronic allergy attacks which are increasing in severity. Her symptom: headaches, dizziness, nausea, cough, watery eyes, stuffy nose, forgetfulness, fatigue. She has seen her regular dr, her obgyn, and recently an urgent care dr. MSDS sheets don't address pregnancy, and they doctors she has seen don't have answers. I am very concerned about her chemical exposure. Should she leave that work environment during her pregnancy?

Brief Answer:
It is safer to leave the work environment.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to healthcare magic. I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

Since she is working in Pool chemical factory, she is exposed to Chlorine. Chlorine is known to cause allergies or exacerbate the allergies. So I suggest that she take leave from her work until delivery.

Chlorine and it's by products are linked to miscarriage and birth defects although there is no clear and conclusive evidence. It would be safer to leave the job until delivery.

Best wishes,
Dr Rama
