Suggest Treatment For Hair Fall And Acne Post Delivery

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Oct 2014
Question: Hi Doc,

Post my delivery, I had not time for my appearance. So, no skin n hair has taken a toll.
Hair: My hair is usually wavy and coarse but I used to manage by conditioning. Now I have a very bad hair fall problem plus it looks more fizzy. I tried going to saloon and opted for Moraccan oil treatment which proved fatal! I guess the product didn't suit me as I was having headache and hairfall increased instead. After much research, am now using mix of olive oil, castor oil, almond oil and coconut oil. I keep it for a day and shampoo with a good conditioner. U will not believe it really reduced my problem 70-80%. Do u think I shud continue this way or u want to suggest me something better?
Skin: I am brown complexioned. Started getting pimples due to lack of sleep(due to baby care)Hence developed ugly marks. Plus I also have uneven pigmentation esp around the mouth. Am trying the usual facials but not much effect. Plus off late I discovered that olive oil is truly magical. So, I apply it on the face during night. Alternatively am using a skin cream (La bride) suggested by my friend during night. Its really lightening my skin but if I don't use it regularly then am back to square one:(
Am really feeling very dejected... please help me!
Note: I am negative on any thyroid issues. But my when I tried having all my hormonal tests done, my Gynec says am pre-diabetic a bit. So, need to lose weight.

Brief Answer:
Hair fall, acne, pigmentation treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your query and I have understood it.

First of all, congratulations for having a new member in family. My best wishes. Hope you enjoying motherhood, though I understand it is a very demanding job.

Coming straight back to the query, I will try to answer point by point.

-You probably have what is called post partum hair loss. This usually starts in the third or fourth month after delivery and ends by six months or so. This is a temporary phase. During pregnancy the increased levels of estrogens in body makes hair thick and lusturous, hair that would normally fall out stays put, resulting in thicker hair. After delivery when estrogen levels fall, as a result those hair that were resting during pregnancy are released precipitously, which is manifested as increased hair shedding.

You may take a high protein diet along with an Iron supplement for 6 months. You may continue with hair oil treatment if you have dry, frizzy hair however instead of hair oils, I would rather suggest a good conditioner after shampoo.

-Regarding acne and spots, I would suggest you to not use castor oil on face, stop taking facials as well as discontinue the night cream that your friend has suggested. These may be one reason that you have continued to develop acne. Use as few cosmetics as possible and wash your face with a gentle cleanser before going to bed.

If I was the treating doctor I would have suggested a gentle cleanser for face wash, twice daily.
Along with that, I would have also suggested topical antibacterial, anti-inflammatory gels containing ingredients like clindamycin, benzoyl peroxide in case you are still having active acne.
At night I would have suggested a topical retinoid, which is not only anti-acne due to its comedolytic properties but also lightens the marks due to stimulation of skin turnover.
Along with topical treatment you may also opt for a few sessions of chemical peeling for pigmentation and post acne marks. A few sessions of chemical peeling would be the ideal way to fade away the pigment and post acne spots and bring back the glow.

Weight loss too would help with acne problem.

Instead of going for a facial and following your friends advice, I would suggest that you seek an appointment with a dermatologist in your region, who would offer you the right kind of treatment for acne. acne spots and pigmentation

Let me know if I can help you further

WoW!
That was a very logical detailed explanation:)

My ask is if you can name the topical antibacterial, anti-inflammatory gel containing clindamycin, benzoyl peroxide and the night cream, a topical retinoid.

Also, if I go to a Dermatologist then can I get only the chemical peel rather than his treatment??

Thanks a ton!

Brief Answer:
Please visit a dermatologist in your region

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Thanks for the appreciation :).

A dermatologist you visit in person would also prescribe you these topical gels (antibiotic, antinflammatory gel and topical retinoid gel). Chemical peeling sessions are usually performed every 2 weeks at the dermatologists clinic. You can specifically inquire about chemical peeling from your dermatologist. There are so many types of chemical peels available with a dermatologist e.g Glycolic peel is for pigmentation and Salicylic peel is for acne.

It would be unethical for me to prescribe you the brand names of the topical's creams/gels on the internet, because actually I have not had the opportunity to examine you. My job here is to give you treatment options and give you pointers in the right directions, so that you are benefited from the information I provide. A visual assessment is the best way to judge before we can prescribe medicines. A dermatologist in your region would be able to examine your skin in person and would be in a better position to prescribe you accordingly.

Regards
Take care
