default
Posted on Mon, 22 May 2017
Question: Dear Doctor,
My fiance aged 25 years have a 5 cm Fibrodenemia on her right breast assessed by mamogram. The doctor said that it is normal for women at this age have this and it is not harmful, and added that we can opt to remove.
We learned from other web sources that usually we don't need worry about Fibrodenemia until 35 years, and may disappear on its own after 30 years.

We are confused whether to do surgery now or wait until 30 years. Please advise.

thanks, XXXXXXX

Hi.
Thanks for your query about your Fiance.
To recapitulate: Female/25 - mammogram says 5 cm fibroadenoma right breast - Doctors advise noted - web study noted - confusion noted ...

I can understand the confusion you both must be getting:
To assist you in decision making please give me some details:
Since when is the lump in breast noted by her?
Any pain just before or after menstrual periods?
Any other complaints?
Is the lump visible and distorting the breast?
5 cm is a large lump- what is her and your wish?
Was the FNAC that is fine needle aspiration cytology done?
Which Specialist have you consulted?
Any other details that you both would like to share?

Thank you very much, Doctor.
She is having this lump for 5-6 years and no change in size. But we diagnosed with the doctor only a month before.
No, she doesn’t have any pain before or after her menstrual periods. She doesn’t have any complaints in terms pain or breast distortion due to the presence of this lump. Also, this lump is not visible, but can only be felt during touching.
We are confused in the sense, whether it will grow and create any complications in the future? Is there any possibility that this lump will disappear after marriage or through medicines or other food habits?
If we remove through surgery, would there any side effects? Removing 5 cm lump would create a void space, which may filled with some fluid? What are the chances of having it again?
We have our marriage scheduled in XXXXXXX first week. So, we are worried that having a surgery now is a good idea or not? Else, can we wait for one year and take a decision?
We didn’t perform FNAC, but did MRI and a mammogram. We consulted both pediatrician and general physician in XXXXXXX Both confirmed that this is a no harmful

Brief Answer:
As detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback, although you have not mentioned about the acceptability from you and your Fiance.
Well, since the lump is there for 5-6 years, it is almost sure that this is a benign one that is not to be worried about.
The fibroadenoma is a benign lump, almost round, non-tender and is freely XXXXXXX meaning it can be moved freely, not related to menstrual periods and remains stationary for a long time.
It does not cause any complications in future other than growing big.
Since this is a lump, it does not disappear in future, not even after marriage or by any medication or food habits.
There are no side effects of removing this other than may cause some puckering. A proper technique will not cause any void space or fluid collection.
There is no chance of it appearing again if removed in-toto.
MRI is almost confirmatory.
But a FNAC is the only proof to have no doubts, this is a simple procedure, hence get this done.
Also needed is an examination by a General Surgeon and not by a Pediatrician or a Physician.
Since your marriage is in first week of XXXXXXX there is time to decide.
If FNAC is certain that this is a Fibroadenoma you can either get this operated if both of you are willing or wait till suitable for you both.

So, confirmation by FNAC, examination by a General surgeon and decision of you both will make thing clear and sound.

I hope this answer helps you in decision making.
