Question: My husband is very depressed and says he is very anxious. He just sits all day and tells me how bad he is getting. If I say something he just says don't get mad at me. Or it is it just makes it worse. He only sleeps a little at a time 3 hrs is good for him. He says he is getting Alzheimer's or dementia. Won't go to Dr says he can't help him. Went before and the pills made him worse when he had this a couple years ago What can I do?

Brief Answer:
He has pseudo-dementia

Detailed Answer:
HI
Thanks for using healthcare magic. I, Dr Abhishek Kapoor, would help you in this query.

I think, he needs to understand about dementia. In dementia, patient has forgetfulness and would not able to recall little thing like name, some work activity, forget about basis skillful activity etc, but patient does not have insight about his illness.

I think, your husband has pseudo-dementia, which is part of depression. Other symptoms of depression include low mood, decreased sleep, decreased concentration, forgetfulness due to lack of concentration or low mood, easy irritability. That means, he has depression and he needs antidepressant with low dose benzodiazepine that would help him to improve the symptoms.

Better to consult a psychiatrist for proper diagnosis and if he is not willing for consultation, you can arrange a home consultation for him. That would help you.

In case, you have more query, you can ask.
