Suggest Treatment For Cough And Nasal Congestion

Question: Hello my 8months old baby boy has cough and stuffy nose. I was advised to give him 5ml of cepodem and 5ml of zedex syrup morning n night for 5 days. The cold has subsided but the cough is still severe hence he throws up the feeds. Please suggest what needs to be done

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... I understand your concern. By what you quote I feel that your kid is recovering from a viral upper respiratory infection. Usually this will start with low to high grade fever followed by cold and intense cough which will subside spontaneously.

Cough is protective reflex in such cases because kid's cannot expectorate the phlegm, during cough it will come up and the child will swallow it and it will come out in the vomiting on motion.

Viral illnesses do not require antibiotics at all like Cepodem.

For cold and cough, you can use Cetrizine at 0.25mg/kg/dose every 12 hourly for 3 days.

For nasal block, plain saline nasal drops will do, every 4-6th hourly to relive nasal congestion.
