Question: Hello doctor. I had a ligament injury 2 yrs back. But it did not heal properly and my leg gets twisted many times if I walk fast or stop suddenly. recently I fell down while playing throwball match and got an MRI done of my affected knee (right knee). The doctor has asked me to undergo athroscopic repair of ACL (excission of meniscal tear). Can you please let me know if the surgery is compulsory or it can be treated by Physiotherapy. Does this surgery cure the knee 100% ( will i be able to play sports normally )? How many days I have to be in hospital and how long it would take to heal completely.

Brief Answer: Arthroscopic surgery should be undertaken. Detailed Answer: Hello XXXXXXX Thanks for your query. I have gone through the report attached. It clearly shows near complete chronic ACL tear. Arthroscopic surgery should be undertaken in young, active patients because the ACL will not heal unless surgically restored. A single hamstring tendon from the back of thigh is the preferred graft. You have to be in hospital for 2-3 days after surgery. After 2-3 weeks, You may be able to walk without crutches. After six months you may be able to return to playing sport. I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care

Hello Doctor, Thanks for the answer. Do I need to walk with crutches for 2-3 weeks after the surgery? During that period will I be able to go to office and do my regular daily chores? or should I take complete rest? I am currently working in Bangalore in an IT firm. Can you refer me some good Orthopaedic Surgeon in Bangalore to whom I can go for the surgery? Regards, XXXX
