Suggest Treatment For Cold And Cough In A Child

default
Posted on Mon, 17 Jul 2017
Question: My 1 year 1 month old daughter has that gur gur sound while breathing when she is sleeping. It is there at day time also which can be heard when we go close to her. But it is very evident at night. She was also coughing couple of times at night. But day time she is fine. Feels like she has little cold but otherwise active and no fever.

Not sure whether I have to take her to Pediatrician for these symptoms and please advise if there is anything I can do before the symptoms increase or become worst.

Symptoms are seen from couple of days and today we started putting nasal drops, we have also given a small quantity of ginger with honey.

Her growth is on track and she is upto date with her vaccination.

Brief Answer:
Nasal blockage likely

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Your child could be having a nasal blockage. Children of this age are nasal breathers and therefore nasal blockage can affect their sleep. If cough or nasal discharge is present it is advisable to give some antiallergic like cetirizine once daily for next few days. Feel free to use Nasoclear Saline Nasal Drops in case of nose block. Give Nasivion only if steam inhalation does not provide full relief. You may give ginger and honey. If the child is otherwise active and playful you need not take her to a pediatrician. I would insist you to wait and watch. Hopefully thing would not worsen but gradually improve. Please be patient as it may last for a week or so.

Let me know if I could help further.

Brief Answer:
Atarax Drops can be given.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. You can give Relent Syr (Cetirizine) 2.5 ml once daily. Alternatively, you can give Atarax Drops 0.6 ml thrice daily as it is a better drug. You can give ginger and honey. One spoon should suffice. No specific dose.

Atarax seems to be working and her condition is now better than before. Thanks for your advise.

Please advise on how long we need to give her this medicine. We started giving it to her from day before yesterday night and including today morning total 5 doses of 0.6 ml each is given so far.

What coukd be the reason for this allergic condition in her? Is there a way we can avoid it in future

Brief Answer:
May be stopped once the symptoms resolve

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Usually this medicine is given for 3-5 days. However, it is not a scheduled duration but rather dependent on how long the symptoms persist. If the condition improves you can stop giving it.

The allergic component is possibly associated with a viral infection. In order to avoid allergic tendencies otherwise, you need to expose her to all types of food items and environmental conditions. That will prime the body and prevent development of specific allergies.
