Suggest Treatment For Anxiety Along With Ringing In Ears
Question: I am having an anxiety attack right now, have severe tinnitus. The ringing is loud and severe right now. Unable to stop shaking from the anxiety I am going through right now. My doctor prescribed Xanax, 0.25. I took it this afternoon about 2:00 pm. It is now 11:00 pm. Can I take another pill now to stop the anxiety attack I am feeling or is it too soon? I am at the brink of snapping.

I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.
Coming to your question directly, yes you can take xanax 0.25mg again right now and also can repeat it if required after 2-3 hours. Its a safe medicine and can take upto 2mg/day if it doesnt cause drowsiness. Its only to be avoided taking daily.
The condition that you are having is basically panic attacks. This is a disorder of anxiety and occurs cause of imbalance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain. especially serotonin, nor adrenaline, and dopamine to some extent. Medicines are the best options to take care of these symptoms. Paroxetine is the the most popular medicine and my drug of choice. I generally prescribe my patients 12.5 mg per day at night which takes care of anxiety symptoms. Also certain medicines like propranolol and clonazepam can be give as required when there is a panic episode or expected situation where panic attack can appear.
Also there is an option of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). This therapy is taken by either a psychologist or a psychiatrist in which the therapist identifies impaired cognitions (Thoughts) and try to correct them. They are 15-20 min weekly session and there should be around 8-10 sessions to help you with your illness.

Thank you for your quick reply. One of my concerns taking Xanax (alprazolam) is my glaucoma issue. The ringing is attributed to my sudden hearing loss. The ENT says I have to learn to live with it. I cannot accept that answer. I will be getting an MRI soon, but the ringing has been devastating. Is there any help out there for me? I am desperate.

Xanax is not contraindicated in glaucoma. You may get an IOP done after you are using xanax and in case if there is no worsening,there should not be any issue.
Regarding the ringing, sensory neural hearing loss can lead to ringing in ears but you should try to get it evaluated further by doing an MRI. Being not my speciality, I wont be of much help to you in this regard.
