Question: A close relative has a lump the size of your index finger in the middle of her throat. A biopsy has shown it to be cancerous but she has been told that she can either leave it or have it removed. She thinks it to be thyroid. What are the effects of this cancer?

Brief Answer:
Depends upon many factors.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Noted the history related to your close relative - has a lump of the size of index finger - in the middle or her throat - Biopsy shows this to be cancerous - but has been told that she can either leave it or have it removed - thinks of thyroid - also noted her medical history of hysterectomy, osteopenia, broken ankle, Fosomax for 16 years, and allergy....
Wants to know the effects of this cancer...

If this is thyroid cancer:
There are two types.
One is of low grade where removing the thyroid and the lymph nodes is helpful.
Another type is where it is very highly dangerous, fast growing, spreads to the local and the distant places very fast.
Hence the effects will depend upon the type of cancer, the grade and virulence, whether the local important structures are involved or not and whether there is distant spread or not.

Please give more information, so that I can assist better.
I hope this answers your query, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
