Suggest Treatment For Raynaud Phenomenon

Question: Yes, thank you.

My niece, who was diagnosed with what her doctor calls a "benign" form of Raynaud's and is not taking any medication for it, has dry, hot, red swollen hands. Her mother says she has become very emotional and her pupils are always dilated (not a drug user). I know my niece had an intrauterine birth device inserted three years ago.

She says she has had red hands since she was a child but now it has gotten so much worse. Is there a common denominator?

Brief Answer:
No correlation between IUD and Raynaud's

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with our health care concerns

You niece was recently diagnosed with Raynaud's and has an IUD. There is no correlation between these two entities. The Raynaud's is usually a form of autoimmune disorder where the body releases antibodies to a certain connect tissue of the body. In your Nieces case this is mild and only causes redness of the hands when she is exposed to cold weather. The best thing she can do is wear good warm clothing whenever the weather is cold.

The IUD is a benign device inserted in to the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Some devices to have either copper or a low dose of progesterone to prevent pregnancy. The amounts of copper and progesterone will not affect the rest of your body because these are trace amounts.

Hello, my question has not been answered.

1. What is the significance of hot, red, swollen hands when people with Raynaud's first lose color in their hands and they become cold due to lack of circulation?

2. In any case, why would a 23-year old girl have red, swollen, hot hands from the fingers to mid-palm?

Brief Answer:
Raynaud's is a vascular problem

Detailed Answer:
I am sorry I miss understood you question. Thanks for clearing it for me.

1. The significance of red swollen hands could be from various causes. The most common and significant would be a form of arthritis like rheumatoid arthritis. This is where the bodies own antibodies are fighting against the connective tissue of the joints. This causes inflammation swelling and destruction of the joint. But from what you mentioned in your initial question is that the doctor did not find anything to suggest rheumatoid arthritis.

In Raynaud's there is a spasms of the small capillaries in the fingers when they are exposed to cold temperatures. This causes a lack of circulation of the fingers and sometimes into the palms. The fingers and palms would turn a dusky blue color. When she gets her hands warm the capillaries open up and the hands can become warm to even red and hot.

My recommendation is that your niece see a rheumatologist who can do a full work up as to the cause of her red swollen hands. My guess is that she may have other inflammatory disease that is causing her hands to swell. These type of inflammatory diseases usually affect young adults.

I hope I answered your question more fully this time. Please contact us again if you have any additional questions
