Suggest Treatment For Kienbock's Disease In Both Wrists

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Apr 2015
Question: I have kienbock's in both wrists. I am a 52 year old female and have had pain for decades in both wrists. Every doctor I saw said it was probably a ganglian cyst or carpal tunnel and that when the pain became bad they would re-evaluate / send me to hand specialist. I saw a hand specialist at the XXXXXXX hand and wrist center and was diagnosed with kienbocks.

my question: Is there any treatment that actually CURES this disease? From what I can understand everything seems geared towards alleviating pain until the point that the lunate bone disintegrates and then they just immobilize the wrist. With both wrists involved, I am very hesitant to undergo any kind of invasive procedure that does not have a verifiable positive outcome.

Brief Answer:
Wrist fusion helps in decreasing long standing pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The treatment of kienbock's disease depends on the stage of the disease. If there is only a compromise of blood supply then a cast can be applied for immobilization that can help in improving the blood supply to some extent. In case the problem is a long standing one then osteonecrosis is likely in which case surgical treatment is the only option for a pain free life. Since you cannot take too many pain killers, lunate excision and wrist fusion will help in decreasing the pain.
Till then keeping the wrist immobilized and doing a hot compress in the area can help.
I hope this answers your query.
