Suggest Remedy For Stomach Pain When On Omeprazole

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Feb 2015
Question: I was prescribed omeprazole 18 month ago after complaining to my gp of stomach pain after eating. I was also referred for an endoscopy (which found that the valve connecting stomach to oesophagus was a bit loose).
recently I ran out of omeprazole and when I got a new prescription 20mg about 3 days later it had no effect at all. I return to my gp who then prescribed 40mg (2X20mg) to be taken before going to bed and first thing in the morning . that is a week ago. There has been no improvement at all. all I can eat is plain rice ( with cooked XXXXXXX carrots, courgettes or spinach. ANYTHING ELSE

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal
I will be answering your query.

I think the symptoms persist due to the quality of the group of medicines to which omeprazole belongs.

The medicines basically stops the acid from being produced in the stomach. But the acid gets accumulated in the wall of the stomach. When you stop the medicine, all the acid starts pouring in again, causing the problem you are facing.

I am assuming that when the omeprazole finished, there was a break in the regular intake of the medicine thereby causing the release of the acid.

There are 2-3 options you have-
1. check that you are using the same brand you were using before. Sometimes it helps.
2. you can start taking ranitidine 150 mg or digene twice a day for a few days and take omeprazole 20 mg as before half an hour before breakfast. The former will take care of the acid secreted, and the omeprazole will take care of the acid about to be produced.
3. try syrup sucralfate o. this will cover the wall of the stomach so that the acid does not burn the stomach wall, causing relief. omeprazole should continue as it is.

Avoid coffee, tea or alcohol.

I hope that helps.
