Question: I used XXXXXXX hair removal for bikini area directly on my vagina and I have burning and irritation. I called my doctor and he said to put cortizone cream and it should take the irritation away. Will I be ok if it also got on my genitals.

Brief Answer:
Yes- the cortisone cream should help and you will be fine

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.
XXXXXXX is a caustic chemical that can dissolve hair on intact skin. Your vulva and vagina are very sensitive and can react to all kinds of creams, perfumes and certainly to hair remover.

If you accidentally got XXXXXXX on your inner lips or in the vagina, it is OK to apply cortisone cream to those areas as well. You can also put ice in a damp washcloth and ice the area too that should help the swelling to go down. This reaction usually goes away in a few hours to overnight. The burning may feel like a vaginal infections, but it literally is just a chemical burn of your skin.

If you can... hydrocortisone ointment (which has a base like Vaseline) may be more soothing to the area than cream, as all creams have a small amount of alcohol in them and can burn very irritated skin when applied. So if it hurts to use the cream, ask the druggist for hydrocortisone ointment as you may have better relief.

Either way, the burning should go away quickly, most likely at the most in 48 hours.

I hope I was able to answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
