Suggest Remedies For Tonsillitis While Treating UTI

Question: I was suffering from UTI and taking Nitrofurantoin 100 mg for 10 days...3 times a day. Its 3rd day...UTI is getting cured but now I am suffering from tonsillitis. Can I take 500 mg Azythromycin for 3 days together with Nitrofurantoin 100 mg?

1. Nitrofurantoin exerts its antibacterial activity only in the urine hence useful in the treatment of lower UTI. It has very little or no systemic antibacterial effect hence not effective in treating throat infection.
2. Azithromycin is effective in the treatment of throat infection like tonsillitis caused by susceptible bacteria.
Usually when taken together these drugs do not cause any harmful interactions, hence you may take a course of Azithromycin for 3 days along with Nitrofurantoin.
