Question: HI
I had panic and anxiety attack a year ago. Had medication for 2 months and it's over. No similar experience has ever been felt. But at some time in middle of sleep I can see my heart racing and pulsing sensationson whole over the body. It happens often but not all days. .When I wake up it cones down to normal. I don't understand why this happening. No incident of anxiety or panic attack happened to me or is any chance of happening. I am feeling more confident now. But a bit concerned also due to the racing heart as it's not considered good in the long run. Please help. Why is this happening and only in middle of sleep.

Brief Answer:
Anxiety could be the possible reason for these symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM

I can understand your concern. You have history of anxiety and panic disorder and currently you are symptoms free but are facing symptoms like sudden onset racing heart or palpitations during sleep. This could occur due to a number of reasons like medical or psychiatric issues.

Hyperthyroidism can cause similar symptoms but other symptoms of hyperthyroidism like tremors, sweating etc are also seen. Still I'd advise you to get your thyroid function tests done to rule out hyperthyroidism.

Other possibility is some cardiac cause. If you have other symptoms like breathlessness then this could be a possibility. You are young so the chances are less. An ECG will rule out cardiac cause.

Anaemia could also result in increased risk of palpitations. Get your hemoglobin done to rule out.

If these causes are ruled out then anxiety is most likely cause of your symptoms. Visit a psychiatrist for evaluation. Low dose benzodiazepines can be used on sos basis and will reduce these symptoms.

Thanks, hope this helps you please don't hesitate to ask again for more information.
