Posted on Thu, 1 Jun 2017
Question: Hi, I am 16 weeks pregnant. Every now and then I get bad headaches and feel exhausted. Yesterday I started getting headache around 1pm and went to lie down, I slept for 2.5hr but woke up with the same headache. I have a bit of cold at the moment so it might have to do something with that but this morning headache is still still there. Should I worry about that?

Brief Answer:
This is a common complaint and you can go ahead and treat the headache

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

In pregnancy, headaches are a common complaint. They are most often an issue during the first 16 weeks of pregnancy. I have tried to come up with an explanation for this complaint but there really is not an explanation. It may be a hormonal effect and it may be related to changes in the volume of fluid in your blood stream or the function of your heart. Regardless, it is not considered a problem at this early gestational age.

When patients are over 20 weeks, if they have a headache AND an elevation in their blood pressure, then we definitely start to worry about them. But this is not the case with you.

You can safely take Tylenol during pregnancy - what have you tried?
