What Medication Can Be Taken For Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Posted on Thu, 4 Jan 2024
Question: Hi doctor,
I have posted here some time back. My problem was bad smell from hair and nose crease. I had acne too. I got a reply like i have seborrheic dermatitis. I have consulted a doctor and he confirmed the problem. I was taking isotretinoin tablet and washing hair with ketokonazole, selinium sulphide shampoos. Also applying mixture of adaplane gel, mupirocin ointment and sodium fusidate gel on face and nose crease. After 3 months I got complete relief from acne and dandruff. I am continuing treatment from the last 8 months But still my skin around nose and hair smells bad when I sweat or if I eat oily food.
what is the permanent solution for this?
Can you suggest a good shampoo and antifungal cream for this problem?
How long I need to continue treatment? I am applying ointment for 2 hrs in the night and washing it off. Is this enough?

Brief Answer:
Needs maintenance therapy.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

1. Seborrheic dermatitis and seborrhea always occur in individuals with oily skin or with oily hairs. In case of prolonged duration, you require maintenance therapy, in the form of systemic (oral) as well as topical applications (shampoo). I suggest you take tab.fluconzole once in a week for 4 weeks and shampoo (ketoconazole). In between, for washing hairs use mild XXXXXXX baby shampoo.

2. With that, wash your face with plain water daily for 4-6 times, have plenty of water (keep hydrated), avoid direct sunlight (apply sunscreen lotion), wear helmet (avoid dust), take green leafy vegetables and fruits, avoid oily fatty or junk foods, do regular exercise and last but not least -stress free lifestyle.

3. Kindly evaluate with ent surgeon for allergic rhinitis (foul smell, common from the nose and from nose skin), Blood tests (blood sugar), complete blood picture to rule out other chronic diseases, where fungal infections (dandruff) are common.

4. Use antibiotic ointment only in infected acne. Kindly discuss with your local doctor about the instructions and investigations.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

Regards.
