Question: Need to know Diet Plan to be followed by the Breast Feeding Mother to maintain a good health of herself and as well as the new born baby. ?

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Congratulation for your newborn baby.

Breast feeding or Nursing mother would take 2800 K cal/ Day in 5 - 6 divided meals instead of 3 major meals for initial 6 months. Iron and calcium supplement should be continued to combat body demand.

She would take healthy balanced diet with added protein like Paneer, Chicken, Fish, Soybean, Eggs, Pulses etc. It should be taken regularly with her choice.

Some food stuffs like Salmon Fish, Blueberries, Legumes, Brown rice, Whole Wheat Bread, Leafy vegetables, Whole grain cereals, Oranges, Low Fat dairy products (Yogurt, Milk or Cheese) etc are essential on her diet. These will boost immunity and strength during breast feeding.

Drink more water 2.5 to 3 liter/ day or take fruit juice to stay hydrated and fit for breast feeding. Do regular meditation or yoga or light physical exercise to stay active and control body weight.
