Brief Answer:
Medicines should be used

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. I can understand your concern for your son.

When depression is not responding to psychological counseling, medicines should be used for treatment.

He is age of 16 so most of the medicines can be used.

Treatment of depression includes both medicines and psychotherapy.

In psychotherapy I prefer cognitive behavior therapy (CBT).In mild cases only CBT is sufficient. In moderate to severe cases initially medicines and then CBT is added. And later on medicines stopped gradually.

In medicines SSRI group of drugs (fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline, escitalopram) are main stay of the treatment. There are other group of drugs as well with different mechanism and excellent results.

In my opinion you must consult psychiatrist for him as soon as possible if not consulted yet. Earlier the treatment starts better the results.

- What symptoms of depression has he right now? Please narrate the severity.

- Let me know how his ADHD and dyslexia are treated?

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.
Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
