Suggest A Diet Plan To Be Followed During Pregnancy

Question: I'm 6 weeks pregnant as of today, I had my first scan and they found a heart beat. I have suffered with eating disorders for 6 years . I do not have one at the moment but I am afraid of becoming fat and never getting my body back which will cause an eating disorder in the future. I am 20years, 47kg and 5ft 1. I have known I am pregnant for 1 week. I have been eating only one meal a day around 600-800cals because I am so scared , I've never really had a healthy diet , I never eat fruit or vegetables or drink water and the only thing I really eat is fries, pies and takeaways. I actually cannot force myself to eat and I have become very depressed and stressed which makes me not want to eat even more. How will this affect my baby at the moment and in the future ?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!
You have wrong perceptions about nutrition.
Firstly now you are at the lower normal range of BMI.
Even if you are not pregnant and are leading sedentary lifestyle basically you need about 1400 Calories. If you are exercising and have active life style you need more calories.
The food you take should consist of carbohydrates, proteins, fats vitamins and minerals. These are necessary for baby's physical and mental growth and development. Remember that baby depends entirely on you for its nutrition.
Eating adequately and nutrition rich food gives your baby strong start in life.
It provides immunity to your baby and determines its eating habits to some extent. If you don't take adequate nutrition you can have pregnancy problems like small baby, premature labor etc.

You can definitely get back your weight and shape after delivery. For a person like you who is so aware it is not difficult at all to reduce weight after delivery. I urge you to consult nutritionist immediately and have follow up with her through out pregnancy.
She can advise you clearly on types of food you need to eat and how much to eat. What you are eating now is totally unhealthy food and does not contain necessary nutrients. I again repeat that this is necessary for your baby's physical and mental growth. Start taking one tablet of folic acid daily

Please do consult Psychologist/psychiatrist to relieve your depression and stress.

I hope this helps. Do keep me updated about your pregnancy.
If you have further concerns I will be happy to answer.
