Question: I am suffering from Varicose veins in my left leg for past 1yr. And due to this, there is a swelling in my left leg and causes discomfort. i experience pain if i fold my affected leg for a long time (possibly due to obstruction of blood flow).

I heard that there is a cure available in Ayurveda for varicose veins. can you please provide further details on it and advise on how to proceed further.

Thanks,

Dear XXXXXXX thanks for contacting XXXXXXX and Ayurveda for your query

1.You have not mentioned the cause of the problem, whether it is occupational, due to disease condition, due to being over weight ,stasis, injury or similar problem in any family member?
2.Any associated ulcers,skin loss,?
3.If pain is there, possibly due to obstruction, condition is Mechanical thus surgical opinion is must who will rule out any clot in the veins {but as condition is 1 year long, hopefully your surgeon has carried out the necessary examination (Doppler study,) dealing with obstruction}, please do mention about the same, whether checked with a general surgeon or not.
4.As you said swelling is there, so any other associated symptoms like twisting or protrusion of the affected vein, any itching, aching,(of veins) OR heaviness, fatigue, cramps (of muscles)of affected side?
5.Any tendency to/of developing cuts, ulcers, infection or blood clots? (Clotting/bleeding time test?)
6.Please revert back with your concerns and opinion regarding the same,if obstruction is not the cause,Ayurveda treatment can be initiated, in the mean time following preventive measures can be adopted:

In Ayurveda we consider this disease under Vaat vyadhi “Siragat Vaat”,thus pacification of Vaat is necessary;
i.To overcome the cause take Vitamin C XXXXXXX diet (banna, black grapes, mint, coriander, milk, green vegetables, lemon, papaya, guava, dry raisins, pineapple, tomato, beet, orange, amla) and protein in your meals (take milk with protein powder, paranthas, sprouted beans and pulses),
ii.Avoid anything which decreases venous return like standing for long hours, sitting cross legs, wearing tight jeans, taking nicotine (Smoking?),
iii. While at work elevate your ankles and while sleeping elevate the foot end to minimize swelling.
iv.You can practice Halasana (Plough Pose) which helps in circulation of blood, but again if obstruction is ruled out.

Hi Sir,

Thank you for your reply.
Please find below the responses for your questions:

1.You have not mentioned the cause of the problem, whether it is occupational, due to disease condition, due to being over weight ,stasis, injury or similar problem in any family member? [[H]] By profession, I am a software engineer so, I sit for long hours. I am not very overweight (Height- 179 cm, Weight- 85kg). This problem was not due to any injury. It just started with pain in my leg (behind the Knee) and then was diagnosed with Varicose Veins

2.Any associated ulcers, skin loss,? [[H]] No ulcers or Skin loss

[[H]] Yes, I consulted a vascular surgeon who referred me for Doppler study. With this test it was diagnosed with Varicose Veins. I was prescribed to wear stockings on my affected leg. But I stopped wearing after 4-5 months as it was more uncomfortable wearing the stockings.

4.As you said swelling is there, so any other associated symptoms like twisting or protrusion of the affected vein, any itching, aching,(of veins) OR heaviness, fatigue, cramps (of muscles)of affected side? [[H]] Protrusion of affected veins, heaviness, fatigue present. No itching.

5.Any tendency to/of developing cuts, ulcers, infection or blood clots? (Clotting/bleeding time test?) [[H]] No Such test done so far. But I didn’t notice any problem with that so far.

[[H]]- I do not smoke/drink.

Thanks,

Thanks for your reply and concern

1.As profession demanded long sitting hours, was it crossed legged (pain behind the knees)??
2.Are you suffering from constipation or swelling in the abdomen?
3.Does Doppler study indicated any OBSTRUCTION? Please reply this query again!
4.Did you had any injection treatment for varicose veins which may have complicated the picture now?
5.EAT A BALANCED DIET THAT INCLUDES PLENTY OF FISH AND FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES,and low in fat and carbohydrates.
6.Blackberries,cherries,which are XXXXXXX in bio flavinoids, help and ease varicose vein symptoms.
7.Drink a mixture of 4 spoon XXXXXXX (tulsi) leaves juice,4 spoon of ginger (adrak) juice and 4 spoon honey (madhu) for 1 month.
8.Capsule Vasoril initially 2 cap twice a day and thereafter 1 cap twice a day is good for peripheral vascular disorder (contains anti inflammatory herbs like guggul, arjuna)
9.Cirabilvadi kshaya 30ml with guggulu tikta ghrita 15g thrice daily along with sacharadi oil for local massage (but make sure don’t apply directly on the varicose veins as they may result in increased pressure, start initially from below upwards.
10. Brahmi (Bacopa monerii) is the drug of choice and is given for 4 continuous week 10-20ml twice daily along with Yasad bhasma.
11.New clinical study has shown drug “PILEX” to be effective in the treatment of varicose veins
12.VARICOSE vein is the incompetency of valves i.e. it's a mechanical problem so surgery is the definite treatment, otherwise conservative treatment is given.

Thanks a lot for the advice Sir!

Please find below the answers for your questions:

1.As profession demanded long sitting hours, was it crossed legged (pain behind the knees)?? [[H]] Yes, the pain is behind the knee of my left leg.

2.Are you suffering from constipation or swelling in the abdomen? [[H]] No constipation or Swelling in the abdomen. But I experience irregular bowel movements.

3.Does Doppler study indicated any OBSTRUCTION? Please reply this query again! [[H]] There was no such indication of any obstruction at the time of Doppler study (which was conducted almost an year back). Not sure about the current situation of the leg.

4.Did you had any injection treatment for varicose veins which may have complicated the picture now? [[H]] No treatment has been taken so far. except the conservative treatment (stockings).

[[H]] About 2 weeks back i consulted a neuro surgeon regarding this. He asked me get a nerve test(ENMG test) done. The test report was normal. That doctor then put me on the following tabs for 1 month and see if it improves:
1. RETENSE capsules
2. Dothip-25

I am using these for past 2 weeks, but see no improvement. This doctor also suggested me to do a MRI scan of the leg after about a month.

Please let me know if you need any other info.

1.Because you have irregular bowel habits, was it the causative factor in developing varicose veins or as a result of varicose veins, so don’t strain yourself while passing stool:
i.Increase fibre in diet (which lowers pressure in the arteries of legs) like green vegetables (cabbage, cauliflower, cucumbers, lady’s finger, palak)
ii.Eat fruit with edible covers (apple, pears), inner cover of mosambi, orange, just ripe banana.
iii.Take 2 table spoon ghee with XXXXXXX warm water, early morning.
iv.Avoid oily/fried food, start with plenty of salad and boiled vegetables with rice and roti,do not take ice cold food/drink,avoid yellow of egg.
v.Eat at a leisurely pace,if in hurry, eat in less quantity, eat less and chew properly.
vi.Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water per day.
vii.Add a mild laxative at night: Abhyarishta 10 ml with equal amount of water at bed time
2.MRI scan will show any venous reflux as the cause of varicose veins
3. Another good Evidence based Medicine /Combintion is given below:
i.Initially you can start with Shothari lauha 250mg thrice a day with trifla decoction.
ii. guduchighan (Samshama) vati 5 tablets 4 times a day with water.
iii. Punarnvadi or mahamanjhisthadi kwatha (pravahi) 20ml with equal amount of water twice a day.

Thank you soo much for your in-depth advise Sir. I am very greatful to you. :)

Due to irregular bowel movements, earlier i used to spend a lot of time(about 30-40 mins) in the toilet (Indian style). It could be the possible cause !!
Now i am using a western toilet. Hope it should be ok.

Also, there is a Ayurvedic doctor in Bangalore who claims that he will completely cure Varicose veins in about 7days.
I remember him saying that he would give me some kind of medicated ghee, steam massage, panchakarma procedure etc for over a period of 7days. and he guarantees that the varicose veins will vanish in about 7days.

Please Share your veiws about this. Are this doctor's claims real? please advice.

Thanks again for having patience with me.

1. Panchkarma procedure which is beneficial for varicose vein is “Raktamokshana-sira vedhan” i.e. blood letting which is useful for peripheral vascular disorders or Medicated Enema (Vasti)) containing Vata pacifying drugs is also suitable.
2. Meanwhile steam massage (Swedana) is done as prior procedure (Poorva karma) before the main procedure i.e. Raktamokshan (Pradhan karma )to loosen any clogged toxins in the veins/arteries and improve body’s blood circulation.
3. Best is to consult for Keraliya panchkarma, which has advantage of having medicines prepared in individual consideration of the patient and disease, instead of fixed formulations as in Ayurveda Panchkarma.
4. Claims are backed by clinical results and trials. Have a general idea about the same of the clinic or patients treated there. It is said that varicose vein are like iceberg, problem lies beneath, make sure the doctor doesn't cure the TIP.

Let me know if you need clarifications.
