Is There Any Correlation Between Smoking Addiction And Poor Cognition Skills?

default
Posted on Sat, 1 Oct 2016
Question: I started smoking 14 years ago. At present, i smoke 30 cigarettes a day. Also from 14 years ago, i have been experiencing lack of understanding of engineering and computer science subjects and ability to concentrate. I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder 3 years back. My academic and professional life was never good for the past 14 years. Is there any relation between smoking and lack of brain power or ability to understand? Or does it have to do with Bipolar disorder? Please prescribe any medicines to improve my power of retention and understanding.

Brief Answer:
complex relationship between smoking, bipolar disorder and brain cognition

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

You had started smoking at age of 20 and already you have smoked for 14 years. This much smoking of course affects physical health in many ways. 30 cigarettes per day is pretty high amount. It not only affects respiratory and cardiac system but also nervous system. It affects brain's functioning in many ways after chronic exposure and leads to cognitive problem. This is one of the reasons for your lacking of brain power.

Bipolar disorder itself can cause cognition problem depending on severity of the problem as well as smoking increases during the episode of bipolar illness. So your ability of concentration is also affected by this factor.

No specific medicine can improve power of retention in such case. The most important thing is to stop smoking. You should ask your psychiatrist who is treating bipolar disorder for deaddiction. Healthy lifestyle improves overall physical as well cognitive functions. This includes regular daily exercise (walking or running), hygienic food habits (no junk food, no fatty food, preferably only home-made food with law salt and fat with more fruits and vegetables) and timely scheduled sleep. Yoga- meditation can also help.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.
Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
