Is Semen Analysis Necessary After A Missed Abortion?

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Feb 2017
Question: Hi - I and my wife I are planning for a baby this month. We had planned for the baby last year around XXXXXXX as well, but unfortunately missed abortion happened in the 3rd month. Our doctor suggested us to wait for few month before planning again, also she suggest me to get semen analysis done. Now, since we are planning again this month, i want to ask following questions:
1) I semen analysis absolutely necessary before we plan again?
2) If by chance I don't not get a chance to get semen analysis done, and we plan, is there any chance to any problem?
3) Doesn't it create any issues with the child or anything like that?

Please let me know these.
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Not needed

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. Let me try to answer your questions:
* I do not think that you need to bother about semen analysis. Had that been the problem, you would have had a difficulty in becoming pregnant. Since you got pregnant (missed abortion was subsequent and therefore not related) you need not worry about this part.
* Most often the missed abortions are due to isolated causes and do not affect a subsequent pregnancy. It would not have any adverse effect on the subsequent offspring.
* You must take folic acid 5mg tablet once daily regularly. This is very important for pregnancy.

Thanks for your quick response.

What I understood from your reply is that, since last time my wife got pregnant( although she suffered missed abortion later), this time before planning I need to get my semen analysis done as we can go ahead with the planning? Also, as suggested by you as well, she has already been taking folic acid tablets since last few months.

Brief Answer:
Semen analysis not required

Detailed Answer:
No, that was not what I meant. I meant to say that you need not get the semen analysis done unless you had difficulty in making her pregnant. For once she already got pregnant. It is unfortunate that the pregnancy did not continue fruitfully. But the factors for the same are different and most often they do not affect a subsequent pregnancy.

It is good to know that she is already on folic acid. She should continue it. She should also get her thyroid profile checked. The TSH level should be below 2.5 mIU/L for a healthy pregnancy to occur. If the levels are higher, supplementation of thyroxine needs to be done.
