Is Pregnancy Possible Despite Negative Pregnancy Test Results?

Posted on Fri, 28 Nov 2014
Question: Before I left Scotland, I thought I was pregnant, but the urine test were negative. I started bleeding, but it wasn't like my normal period which is very regular in terms of length and symptoms. I went to a pregnancy center ad the ultrasound showed a sac that the tech said looked about 5 weeks even though I should have been 6 or 7 because my date of conception could have only been one weekend, but the blood test said I wasn't pregnant. They told me that I was probably just miscarrying. I didn't understand that because if that was the case why were we able to see the sac a few minutes before the blood test. Anywho I moved back to the states and the symptoms get worse so I go see my ob/gyn. He says my uterus isn't as small as it used to be or should be so he orders a blood test. The nurse says that it is negative except I swear I feel something in my stomach and my body is just haywire. I've been bleeding, but it's not what it normally is. I have been treated since I was 16 because of the intensity of my cramps, but I haven't cramped since my last normal period in July. The only cramp like I am experience is in my back. I am heavy, but I had lost 40+ pounds in the last year. I'm starting to pack on weight again and no mater how many miles I walk/run it won't go anywhere. With all that being said my question is cold I be pregnant or is it all in my mind.

Brief Answer:
Not pregnant.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Your repeated pregnancy tests are negative. This rules out the pregnancy. If you are having a regular period like bleeding then there is nothing to worry. If there is an irregular spotting and the bleeding is persistent then you need to have a repeat ultrasound scan. Since a sac was seen on the earlier ultrasound scan it is possible that you have miscarried. But if there are any retained products left in the uterus then it can cause an irregular bleeding with a negative pregnancy test.
You can consult your gynecologist and get an ultrasound scan done and if everything comes normal then no need to worry.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

The bleeding isn't normal, which is part of the problem, and there was a negative blood test when we saw the sac. There is also the issue that I am still exhibiting pregnancy symptoms.

Brief Answer:
Ultrasound scan is needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If the bleeding is not normal then an ultrasound scan is needed to know if there are any retained products in the uterine cavity. Blood test for pregnancy is a more confirmatory test. If blood test is also negative then a viable pregnancy is ruled out.
Hope my answer is helpful.
