default
Posted on Mon, 27 Apr 2015
Question: I had participated in unprotected sex with a woman who is HIV Negative two weeks ago from today.I got tested her for HIV after our intercourse and got HIV Non-reactive report and my report is also HIV Non-reactive .Apart from me she had another sex partner whose HIV status is unknown. Now i'm feeling itchy on my body back part while sleeping.Did I got HIV already? As i read in the internet that Rash with itchy is one of the symptoms of HIV.Please guide me what to do.Are there any tests with shorter window period to confirm HIV. I know for HIV Antibody Test it requires 13 weeks window period. But as i'm having sleepless nights for the last 10 days i want to know whether i got HIV or not

Brief Answer:
Unlikely HIV.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for query. I am Dr Bharatesh D Basti answering your query.
Welcome to health care magic.
I have gone through the details.

The chances of HIV transmission by unprotected intercourse with HIV positive person is 1/200 to 1/1000.The risk is low.She is negative. So there is almost no risk.
The tests for antibodies can be positive 2-6 weeks post exposure. But is conclusive after 12 weeks.

Post 2 weeks exposure HIV 1&2 RNA PCR test will be very sensitive test.It detects the HIV RNA component .It is > 99% sensitive after 10 days.
You can go for this test now to relieve your anxiety.

Skin rash is non specific and is unlikely due to HIV. it can be due to other simple infection or allergy.

You can get back for any clarification.

Hi doctor thanks for the reply.I'm scared because I don't know the Status of HIV of her other sex partner.I thought she may be in window period and she could got her HIV report as Non-reactive. Now my question is " Can HIV be transmitted in window period? She may be negative and is there any chance that she is carrying HIV in window period ? "

My second question is What does HIV 1&2 RNA PCR test require, blood or urine or something else? How accurate it is after 16 days from exposure?

For your information I got tested my sex partner for Hepatitis B & VDRL(Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) test for Syphilis and she is got Negative for both the tests also.

Excuse me if i'm being illogical

Brief Answer:
HIV RNA PCR is accurate after 16 days.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for follow up query.

Yes there are possibilities of transmission of HIV during window period. But the chances of her being positive may be less with tests being negative.

It is good that other STDs tests too have come negative.
Blood sample will be collected for PCR test.it is accurate after 10 days.So good after 16 days too.
You can get back for any clarification.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
HIV RNA PCR detects earlier .

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for follow up query.

This too detects the component of multiplying HIV virus. This also is similar to RNA PCR but is sensitive 1 week later to RNA PCR.
You can go for either of test.
Early detection would be HIV RNA PCR.
You can get back for any clarification.
Thank you
