Is It Safe To Exercise While On Cipro For UT Infection?

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Oct 2014
Question: After trying two different meds (Macrobid was ineffective and I had an allergy to Keflex)I have been prescribed with Cipro for a UTI. I am slightly concerned because I am a runner and know about the tendinitis and tendon tear risks. Should I stop running while I am on this med? How long is the "risk" period related to the drug?

Thank you.

I also lift weights on days that I do not run...Is this something I should stop as well? What type of exercise is safe?

Brief answer....given below
Detailed answer...
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have read your query and understood your concern.
This topic of tendinitis induced by medicines like CIPRO is really  a controversial topic and different people have different views regarding it.
Some researchers say the risk is neglible while others say it to be more, however the fact is that the risk is definitely there. But this risk is more in people who are above the age of 60 years, patients taking steroids or patients who are recipients of kidney, heart or lung transplants.
In practice we ask the person to stop the CIPRO if he develop pain in Achilles around a week or more of starting the CIPRO.
Since the tendinitis occurs more in Achilles, you are advised to stop running,in the event you develop pain.
However in few cases, quadriceps, long head of biceps and rotator cuff tendons of shoulders can also get involved. In such cases, even weightlifting is also prohibited.
In nutshell,if you develop pain in any of tendons as mentioned above, after one week of starting the CIPRO,you stop it and switch to some other antibiotic.
Since you have already taken two other antibiotics earlier, the best is to get the urine culture done to start the new  antibiotic,in case you have to stop the CIPRO.
I hope it helps, however you may revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks

Is there a time period in which I should not exercise while I am taking Cipro? I have seen information that states that the dangers could last up to weeks after finishing...I only have a 3 day 500 mg (250 mg tablets 2 times per day) prescription.

Hello,
Only 15-20 people in 100000 people develop tendinitis after taking CIPRO.
As I told you in my earlier reply, stop CIPRO if you develop pain.
If you don't develop pain, then there is no need to stop it.
It is correct that one can develop tendinitis even weeks after stopping CIPRO,but this is rare.
Thanks
